Real Time Collaboration in Office Web Apps

Great news for our Office 365 customers!  Real-time co-authoring is now available in Office Web Apps.  If you don't know what Office Web Apps can do for you - check this link out.  In a nutshell - Office Web Apps allows you to edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without having to actually open up Office on your desktop.  This is a great solution for plant floor staff, highly mobile staff, or users who (for whatever reason) just don't have Office installed.

Enabling External Communications (Federation) for Lync in Office 365

If you are using Lync inside Office 365, it is very easy to enable your users to communicate with other Office 365 users as well as Skype users.  You need to be an Office 365 administrator to perform this function.  Log into the Office 365 admin center and navigate to the Lync administration section.  Once you are there, choose the Organization tab, and then set the value in the drop down to your preferred setting.  You have three options:

Windows 8- A Fresh Look at Microsoft’s Latest Operating System.

As a Microsoft Cloud Champion Partner and outsourced IT support specialist in Greenville, SC, Palmetto Technology Group (PTG) upgraded to Windows 8 before its official release.  It’s been a lot of fun to learn this new operating system, and there are many shortcuts and quick keys built into this OS that can really enhance the overall customer experience. Now that Windows 8 has been released to the public, I’d like to take some time to share our 3 favorite features:

Why I Love Office 365 as the CEO of a small business–Part 2-Your biggest asset is inside your employees’ heads

As the CEO of an SMB, I recognize that one of our greatest assets is tapping the knowledge of our employees.  On any given day each employee may deal with up to 15-20 individual customers, 3-5 vendors, 10-15 fellow employees, and 3-5 strategic partners.  That’s as many as 540 unique interactions per day! Sound familiar?  When I talk to other CEOs this is not an uncommon problem – and if you think that just one or two of these interactions produce some bit of information that would be useful for the entire team – there’s a lot of data that would be useful for the entire team to leverage.

Why I Love Office 365 as the CEO of a small business–Part 1

It’s no secret that we (PTG) are big fans of Microsoft’s Cloud offering, Office 365.  It brings together really awesome technology on a single platform – SharePoint Online for collaboration, Lync for real-time messaging with employees and partners, and Exchange for enterprise class messaging, calendaring, and tasks. Clearly we are a little biased as a Microsoft Tier 3 Cloud Champion (Microsoft’s top designation for Cloud partners) and Cloud Accelerate Partner – but I decided to write a series of blog posts on why I love Office 365 as a CEO of any small business – not necessarily a technology company.  What most folks don’t know about me is that I am really not a techie – and that’s the position I will take in these posts.  How does Office 365, with the tools that I use everyday, help me get my job done as the CEO?

BlackBerry Shortcuts

We love BlackBerry devices at PTG.  We tried to go the Windows Mobile route a few years back (after having used BlackBerry devices at larger corporations) and there really is no comparison for heavy email users.

If it's multimedia you're after, you're better off with an iPhone or Windows Mobile device.  But if you want your smartphone to really work - we think BlackBerry is the way to go (with the exception of the Storm of course - the worst BlackBerry of all time).

So how can you make your BlackBerry work harder?  Put these keyboard shortcuts to use.
